Transfer of Training!
It is well known from Dr. Anatoly Bondarchuk’s work that it is very important for exercises to transfer well to the particular sport involved. This transfer of training becomes more and more important the more advanced an athlete becomes. A lower level athlete can get away with doing more general preparatory type exercises in their routine. The more advanced an athlete becomes the more specific the exercises must become to the individual sport. An example of this would be a young shot putter may do a lot of squats, deadlifts, cleans, etc. as part of their workout. A more advanced thrower would do a much higher volume of the actual throwing events with lighter and heavier implements because these exercises will transfer to their competition much more effectively.
